1/3 US Children Start Using Mobile Devices Before They Learn To Speak

One in three children in the United States begins to use a mobile phone or tablet computer before they learned to talk, as the article published by the online research organization Common Sense Media says.

A group headed by Victoria Rideout of Common Sense Media already conducted  the alike study in 2011. Two years later, they decided to study the change in the number of young mobile devices users, and invited nearly 1.5 thousand families where the children were under the age of 8 to participate in the study. The scientists asked parents questions about the time their child spends playing video games, or, for example, to watching cartoons.

It was found out 2-year old kids spend about an hour watching TV, playing computer, tablet and mobile phone, 2-4-year old children - almost two hours, and 5-8-year old ones - almost 2.5 hours. Television, as in previous studies of children's preferences, remains to be "the favorite" passtime. Moreover, its educational function is higher than that of other devices - about 61% of children is watching a variety of educational programs.

However, new gadgets are gradually gaining popularity: for example, about 38% of children use them even before they learn to talk, and since 2011 this figure increased by almost four times. Scientists explain this trend by the ease of mobile phones and tablets use.
